Netflix has signed up for Smokin’ Aces director Joe Carnahan’s thriller, RIP, starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.
Regular collaborators Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are to work together again in RIP, an upcoming crime thriller which has now been snapped up by Netflix.
Joe Carnahan (Narc, Smokin’ Aces) will direct his own script, co-written with screenwriter Michael McGrale (CSI: Miami), and the whole project is being produced by Damon and Affleck’s production company, Artists Equity.
Set up in 2022, Artists Equity has turned out a number of films over its short history, several of them starring either Affleck or Damon or both. Last year’s Air, about some men inventing a shoe, emerged to decent reviews, and saw Damon and Affleck co-star for the first time since 2021’s full-blooded historical drama, The Last Duel.
Artists Equity has also bankrolled the upcoming Doug Liman comedy thriller The Instigators, which stars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s brother Casey (Ben Affleck also contributed to the script according to Liman). The firm is also behind upcoming action thriller sequel The Accountant 2, in which Ben Affleck will return as Christian Wolff, an accountant who’s also good at discharging firearms.
Damon and Affleck’s partnership goes all the way back to the 1990s, when the pair co-wrote and starred in Good Will Hunting, which earned the two 20-somethings an Oscar for Best Screenplay.
The Hollywood Reporter writes that RIP is aiming to begin shooting in the autumn, with Damon and Affleck having managed to find a home for their project – that’d be Netflix – within a matter of weeks. With The Instigators being distributed by Apple TV+, the thriller genre in its various forms has found a comfortable refuge among streaming’s biggest platforms.
