The Joaquin Phoenix-starring historical epic Napoleon will be coming to cinemas later this year, courtesy of Apple’s new theatrical distribution strategy.
Apple Original Films has partnered up with Sony Pictures Entertainment to bring Ridley Scott’s latest historical epic into cinemas. Originally titled
Kitbag, the film that is now going by the name of
Napoleon will land in cinemas worldwide on November 22nd.
Napoleon is certainly a high profile project, which looks set to chart the relationship between Napoleon and his wife, Josephine.
Joaquin Phoenix is on board to play the role of the ambitious and ruthless would-be ruler with Vanessa Kirby playing his wife. The script was written by David Scarpa, who penned Scott’s
All The Money In The World.
With Apple’s
Killers Of The Flower Moon hitting cinemas in October, this marks a heavy opening salvo from Apple as the studio looks to make a splash in theatrical distribution. Whilst Scorsese had secured some kind of theatrical release for
Killers Of The Flower Moon from Apple from the outset,
Napoleon marks a key moment in the studio’s strategy where it actively pursued a theatrical distribution partner (in the form of Sony) rather than having to be persuaded by a third party.
On the awards front, these two films will surely loom large too, but we’re just excited to see two huge non-franchise films added to the end of the year. Probably not as relieved as cinema operators though, with recent reports suggesting that the back end of 2023
is looking starved of big releases. Two major films of this ilk will surely help things, and let’s hope there’s more to come.
