Richard Ayoade adapting The Semplica Girl Diaries for his next directorial project

Richard Ayoade is preparing to direct his third film, The Semplica Girl Diaries, and here are the first details. Richard Ayoade doesn’t direct movies too often, but when he does, the results are always worth watching. His directorial debut, 2010’s Submarine, is a superlative coming of age film, while 2013’s The Double saw him move into dystopian sci-fi horror territory. It’s the genre he’s returning to for his next film The Semplica Girl Diaries. Adapted from the book by Booker prize winner George Saunders, the surreal story is set in a world where the titular Semplica Girls are used as status symbols: poor people are paid to be turned into ornaments that hang on the houses of the wealthy. Ayoade will direct, and also and pen the screenplay for the film with Saunders. The Semplica Girl Diaries is set to shoot later this year, we’ll keep you updated as we hear more. British Comedy Guide
