Reports state Lucasfilm are planning five-year map for Star Wars films

The Star Wars cinematic  franchise is reportedly set to grind back into motion after a multi-year hiatus. After watching 2019’s The Rise Of Skywalker, most fans agreed that the Star Wars series needed some time away from cinema screens. Whilst lots of talented people were doing great work on the movies, we’d reached a point where the series’ cinematic releases were falling short of the potential they clearly possessed. Wisely, Lucasfilm opted to simply pull Star Wars away from cinema screens, instead focusing on smaller screen, long-form storytelling on Disney+. It’s a gambit that seems to have paid off too, with the majority of the Disney+ shows managing to satiate a fanbase that often seems at odds with itself and unsure of what it really wants. Andor in particular is a show that seems to have navigated that tricky path between telling fresh stories and linking to the series’ mythology, a problem that has plagued Lucasfilm ever since it relaunched Star Wars in cinemas back in 2015 with The Force Awakens. Having regained its footing somewhat, reports are suggesting then that Lucasfilm is positioning Star Wars for a cinematic comeback, assembling a five-year roadmap. Jeff Sneider, a reporter on The Hot Mic podcast, has claimed that the plan will be revealed, most likely at some point in 2023. He reported that “I think it was a conscious decision to pivot to television for a while and really establish Disney+ and tell some different stories”, but noting that when it comes to films, it’ll be 2025 until we see more movies. Bob Iger’s return as Disney CEO will no doubt also play a role here, with the returning Disney boss probably being quite keen to restore a key Disney franchise to cinemas.
