The woman who dreamed the indelible Moomins into existence has had her own story dramatised and soon we’ll be able to see it.
Tove Jansson’s best-known work is undoubtedly her collection of Moomin novels, short stories, comics and illustrations. An account of valley life, focused on the Finn Family Moomintroll, these are a window onto a heartbreakingly melancholic world of sweetness, sadness and almost unrivalled charm.
A biopic of Jansson, called simply Tove, premiered last year, and set a homeland record as “the highest grossing Swedish-language Finnish film in the last 40 years.”
Now, despite everything going on, it’s been announced that Tove is headed towards release in many countries around the world. This includes the UK and Ireland, where Blue Finch will be doing the honours, and the US and Canada, where the release comes courtesy of Juno Films and the brilliantly-named Films We Like respectively.
The trailer for the film goes some way into introducing Jansson, at least in biographied form.
The official blurb sets the stage, including some (disappointingly) coyly coded references to Jansson’s sexuality.
In the midst of her artistic struggles and unconventional personal life, Tove Jansson found worldwide success from an unexpected side project: the creation of the beloved world of the Moomins. TOVE is a captivating drama about the creative energy of an iconic talent and her turbulent search for identity, desire and freedom.
There’s no specific release date in the news report but now that the film is on our radar, we’ll do our best to keep an eye out for more details to pass along. In the meantime, enjoy the poster.
