Alexander Payne returns to helm a sequel to the brilliant 1999 comedy Election, and Reese Witherspoon is set to return.
Reese Witherspoon has signed up to reprise her role as Tracy Flick in a sequel to one of her best-ever films, Election. What’s more, Alexander Payne, the director of the 1999 cult comedy is returning to direct.
The film will be based on Tom Perrotta’s recently published novel, Tracey Flick Can’t Win, a sequel to his 1998 novel upon which the original Election was based. The movie will be coming to Paramount+, according to reports, so a cinema run is probably out of the question.
Still, everything seems to be in place for a successful return to an acidic comedy character in the form of Witherspoon’s Tracy Flick. In the recently-published novel, Tracy Flick has not entered into a successful career in politics as she memorably intended to in the first film. Instead, she’s struggling with adulthood and working as a teacher, much like her nemesis who was played by Matthew Broderick in the 1999 film.
We’re not sure where this leaves Legally Blonde 3, a project for which details continue to prove elusive. As far as we know there is still no director in place for that project so it’s possible that Tracy Flick Can’t Win may even leapfrog the announced Legally Blonde threequel, which seems to have been in development for a very long time now. We’ll bring you more on either of these projects as we hear it.
