Our original story follows…

10th July, 2024: There’s still no precise release date, but it’s better than nothing: director Jeremy Saulnier’s upcoming (and long delayed) thriller Rebel Ridge will stream on Netflix in 2024.

Saulnier’s latest film, following the superb indie thrillers Blue Ruin (2013) and Green Room (2015), as well as 2018’s Hold The Dark (2018), originally began filming in 2020. But then a series of setbacks delayed its production, and for years, exactly when Rebel Ridge would emerge has remained uncertain.

Now, thanks to What’s On Netflix (as spotted by World Of Reel), Saulnier’s film has now appeared on Netflix’s official 2024 slate (Google Doc), updated on the 8th July. Again, there’s no precise release date attached, but it does at least confirm that Rebel Ridge will appear on the platform within the next four and-a-bit months.

There’s also a synopsis on the document linked above which, as far as we can work out, is new. Here it is:

An ex-Marine (Aaron Pierre) grapples his way through a web of small-town corruption when an attempt to post bail for his cousin escalates into a violent standoff with the local police chief.

It sort of sounds a little bit like an updated First Blood.

Back in March, we spoke to Jeremy Saulnier about Rebel Ridge’s production, which he described as ā€˜tumultuous’. Aside from setbacks due to the pandemic, the production was also affected by the sudden departure of original star John Boyega; filming then had to shut down for 11 months while Saulnier and his team sought a replacement. British actor Aaron Pierre was eventually signed as the new lead, and shooting started again in April 2022.

“We came back three years in a row to make that movie,” Saulnier told us. “It had a tumultuous birthing process, but because of that, it’s my first movie where I’m fully at peace with it at the release point – whatever that might be, we have not found the release date yet.ā€

With a budget of around $37-40m, Rebel Ridge is the biggest production Saulnier’s taken on to date. Given the strength of his earlier films, it’ll be exciting to see what he’s made this time around.
