Filmmaking duo Radio Silence have revealed a few details about their plans for the remake of Escape From New York.
Directing duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett – otherwise known as Radio Silence – are currently doing the promotional rounds for Scream 6, which is released at the end of this week.
In between talking about Ghostface and their favourite scary movies, they also found time to provide an update on their remake of Escape From New York, which was announced last year.
John Carpenter’s 1981 film introduced the world to Snake Plissken, Kurt Russell’s grizzled eyepatch wearing convict who is sent to Manhatten, a high security prison in 1997, to rescue the president. It was followed by Escape From L.A in 1996.
Originally announced as a reboot, Radio Silence describe it as more of a “requel”, citing the term they themselves popularised in Scream 5 as a film that serves as a sequel to the original but also as a remake. They explained that “requel is the idea. There’s no way to remake how great that movie is, would be a fool’s errand to try. So, you know, we’ll try to borrow what we love from it and find a new way to put the package together”.
There is no word yet on whether Russell will reprise his role, but Carpenter is involved as an executive producer.
