Writer Jay Glennie will explore the making of Quentin Tarantino’s 2009 and 2019 films in a pair of upcoming books – the first in a planned series.

Quentin Tarantino’s films Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and Inglourious Basterds will be the subject of two upcoming books written by Jay Glennie and published by Little, Brown imprint Voracious next year.

Each book will explore the making of those films individually, with Tarantino providing the foreword for each as well as access to assorted behind-the-scenes stuff including photos, earlier drafts of scripts and so forth.

Glennie has form when it comes to writing in-depth making-of books; his earlier work has covered such classics as Trainspotting, Raging Bull, The Deer Hunter and Nicolas Roeg’s Performance.

“I have Jay Glennie’s books in my collection, and I have read and loved them, in particular on the making of The Deer Hunter. I just know that there is no better guy to take a deep dive into my movies,” Tarantino told Deadline. “Myself and my cast and crews have loved reliving our time making Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Inglourious Basterds with Jay, and we’re all looking forward to seeing the finished books. This is just the beginning, as I know Jay is as excited as me to explore my other movies.”

As Tarantino notes, these are the first in a planned series of books that cover Tarantino’s career to date. Unusually, Glennie’s starting with the filmmaker’s most recent movie, 2019’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, then skipping past 2015’s The Hateful Eight and 2012’s Django Unchained to cover 2009’s Inglourious Basterds. There could be a logical narrative reason for this, though.

Five years on from the release of Once Upon A Time, it’s still unclear what Tarantino will make as his self-described final film. For at least two years, it sounded as though he was going to make another period piece called The Movie Critic, but that was suddenly abandoned in April.

Perhaps, by the time Glennie’s finished covering Tarantino’s films to date, the writer-director’s final opus will be finished and ready to write about.

Jay Glennie’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and Inglourious Basterds books are due out in autumn 2025.
