Aberdeen’s only independent cinema could yet return from closure, following the planned return of the Edinburgh Filmhouse venue.
Last week we reported the good news that Edinburgh’s Filmhouse cinema is set to return. The celebrated arthouse venue has been shuttered since last year and represented perhaps the highest profile casualty of a wave of closures that rocked the independent sector in a short space of time.
The cinema’s sister venue, the Filmhouse in Aberdeen also closed its doors at the same time as the parent company, the Centre for the Moving Image went into administration. That cinema’s closure meant that the region of Aberdeenshire lost its only independent cinema and so, with the news that the Edinburgh venue was set to reopen under new stewardship, hopes began to rise that the Aberdeen venue would follow suit.
Whilst nothing is yet confirmed, the city’s council have confirmed that it is reviewing plans to reopen the cinema. The business plans of two separate parties are currently being reviewed, according to Screen Daily. The council has a key say in which party will get to operate the cinema as it owns the building, which has been in operation as a cinema (although not continuously) since 1898.
