Peter Jackson has been chatting about who he believes really broke up The Beatles – and it wasn’t Yoko.
Peter Jackson’s hugely anticipated three-part Beatles documentary, The Beatles: Get Back, will be with us this week on Disney+. Jackson has applied the same technical wizardry to the film as he did to his World War I documentary They Shall Not Grow Old, meaning it looks much more like contemporary footage. It promises to be quite the production.
Doing the PR rounds for the three-part film, Jackson has been talking about the band in detail, dropping this nugget about what he believes was really the reason for the group’s split.
“Yoko didn’t break up the band”, he states. “The band broke up over disagreements, with Allen Klein coming in to run their business affairs — which Paul didn’t agree with. The Beatles were always a band who always had a hard-and-fast rule that it’s four votes or it doesn’t happen. If all four weren’t in agreement, it would not occur, it had to be unanimous”.
“For the first time in the history of The Beatles, it was three votes to one. John, George and Ringo wanted to bring in Allen Klein to run their business affairs, and Paul didn’t, and they said ‘well, Paul, Allen Klein is coming in because we are three votes and you are one vote’. Paul tried to make it work and so did they, but it drove a wedge between them, and that’s why the band broke up. It had nothing to do with Yoko”
The film, which promises to explore the legendary band’s ‘difficult’ working relationship with a candour that has not been seen previously, is set to release in November on Disney+, on the 25th, 26th and 27th.
