Game Of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage has spoken out against Disney’s remake of Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs.
In recent years, Disney’s filmmaking strategy has largely been to dig around in their animated back catalogue for classic tales to remake. So far we have seen live-action adaptations of
Cinderella, Beauty And The Beast, and
Jungle Book, to name just a few. In the works at the moment is a remake of
Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs. Latina actor Rachel Zegler has been cast in the lead role of Snow White, with Gal Gadot set to play the Evil Queen. But not everyone is impressed with the choice to remake this old tale, and
Cyrano actor Peter Dinklage has spoken on exactly why it’s a bad idea.
Speaking on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast, Dinklage says “there’s a lot of hypocrisy going on”. Criticising the choice based on the films’ backwards depiction of the dwarfs, he explains he was “a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a latina actress as Snow White. But you’re still telling the story of
Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs. Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me”.
Dinklage continues, “you’re progressive in one way but then you’re still making that f***ing backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together; what the f*** are you doing, man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soap box? I guess I’m not loud enough”. Dinklage has made it clear that his ire is directed at Disney for its choice to remake the tale, and not at actress Rachel Zegler. He even said he would be happy to see the film remade if a progressive and interesting spin was put on it, instead of a faithful adaptation that reinforces negative stereotypes.
Snow White is due to start production this year, but Disney has not yet announced any of its plans or casting information for the dwarfs. There is certainly room to make some changes to the original tale, if they wanted to. Some versions of the German fairytale have featured robbers instead of dwarfs (a feature that was incorporated into 2012’s
Mirror Mirror, although those characters were both dwarfs and robbers). This just goes to show that Disney could scrap the dwarfs altogether and still maintain the themes and characters at the heart of the tale.
The release date for the live-action
Snow White has not yet been announced. More news as we hear it.
