Marvel and DC stars will unite in the Amazon Studios action comedy Grand Death Lotto, which is set to begin production next week.
Paul Feig’s next film is about to shoot and the cast has been revealed for wait for it…
Grand Death Lotto. With a title like that and Feig’s name on it, how could we not be excited?
Well, the onscreen talent is pretty impressive too, with none other than Shang-Chi himself, Simu Liu leading the way. His MCU co-star, Awkwafina is also starring in the film, as will John Cena. The former wrestler is a member of James Gunn’s take on
The Suicide Squad, having also starred in the TV spin-off,
Peacemaker. Like Liu and Awkwafina, he’s excellent at combining comedy and action so we’re keen to see where this one goes.
Amazon Studios is backing the project which is set to begin shooting next week. The
Bridesmaids director looks set to work with the studio again, given that it was announced last summer that he’d be making a sequel to
A Simple Favour with Amazon as well. As far as
Grand Death Lotto goes, the setup sounds like it could lay the foundations for all sorts of glorious mayhem. According to the synopsis, it’s ‘a story set in a financially stricken California in the near future where residents are allowed to kill the winner of the state’s lottery before sundown in order to claim the prize.’
As for the roles each character will play? ‘Newly arrived in Los Angeles, lottery winner Katie (Awkwafina) must join forces with amateur jackpot protector Noel (Cena) to make it to sundown in order to legally claim her multi-billion dollar prize. Liu plays Louis Lewis, Noel’s protection rival Louis Lewis who also wants to keep Katie safe and claim his rich protection commission.’
All three actors are set to feature in some big projects this year. Liu will appear in Greta Gerwig’s
Barbie whilst Cena is part of the
Fast X cast. Awkwafina is set to appear in
Renfield and
The Little Mermaid. No word as yet whether this project will be under Amazon’s MGM banner (perhaps upping the likelihood that the film could see the inside of a cinema) but most outlets are touting it as a Prime Video production. We’ll bring you more details on
Grand Death Lotto as we hear them.
