The director and star of Wonder Woman and the upcoming Wonder Woman 84 will reunite for Paramount to retell the tale of Cleopatra.
Paramount has come out in top in a heated bidding war to secure the Wonder Woman creative duo of Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot for a high-budget Cleopatra movie, according to Variety. Interest was reportedly high in the project, with Netflix, Apple, Universal and Warner Bros. all keen to secure the movie.
Elsewhere, Sony Pictures already has a long-gestating Cleopatra project in the works that was set to feature Angelina Jolie at one point, although the current status of that film is unknown. It’s most likely that the project, if it isn’t dormant already, will be put on ice with the news that Paramount’s project is in active development.
Laeta Kalogridis will pen the script for the new film, having previously written the big screen adaptation of Shutter Island and the 2004 historical epic, Alexander.
The film will be the latest in a string of high-profile Cleopatra projects, notably including the 1963 film, starring Elizabeth Taylor, that was so expensive that it almost bankrupted 20th Century
Fox. Jenkins and Gadot’s next collaboration is Wonder Woman 84 which is currently still set to release at the end of this year. More news on this one as we have it.
