Patty Jenkins tells her story over her departure from both Star Wars: Rogue Squadron and Wonder Woman 3.
Last week, the internet was abuzz with widely-reported rumours that Wonder Woman 3 had been cancelled by the new regime at Warner Bros, a story that in turn sparked lots of chatter about the direction that the new-look DC Universe might be taking under the creative stewardship of James Gunn.
Gunn himself took to Twitter to offer direct responses to these rumours (even if some of them were a bit tetchy) but stopped short of actually confirming or denying if any projects had been cancelled.
Now, the swirl of stories has led to the director of the third planned Wonder Woman film, Patty Jenkins, to also address the speculation, not least the story that she refused to make studio-requested changes to the project, choosing instead to walk away.
Whist she’s at it, Jenkins has also opened up a little about her time spent on working with Lucasfilm on Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, a project that was widely believed to have been suspended or outright cancelled.
According to Jenkins however, both projects are still alive. As far as Rogue Squadron is concerned, the project is still being pushed forwards according to Jenkins. “That project has been in active development ever since [our new deal]”, she writes. “I don’t know if it will happen or not. We never do until the development process is complete, but I look forward to its potential ahead”.
The deal that the filmmaker is referring to is one that was signed between herself and Lucasfilm to push development of the film further down the line when Jenkins realised that her timeline could not match up with Lucasfilm’s production window. That issue was caused by Jenkins desire to get Wonder Woman 3 made.
As for Wonder Woman 3, Jenkins has this to say about the rumours that she has walked away from the project:
“This is simply not true. I never walked away. I was open to considering anything asked of me. It was my understanding there was nothing | could do to move anything forward at this time. DC is obviously buried in changes they are having to make, so I understand these decisions are difficult right now.”
You can read Jenkins’ full comments below, but it certainly sounds like she’s keen to remain on both projects.
As to what the Wonder Woman 3 and the wider DCU will eventually look like, we’ll simply have to wait and see. On the Star Wars front, its heartening to hear that the Rogue Squadron project may still be alive and we wonder if it will feature in the five year cinematic roadmap that Lucasfilm is said to releasing at some point next year.
