Paramount rebuffs streaming offers for Top Gun: Maverick

Both Netflix and Apple have reportedly enquired about purchasing the upcoming Top Gun: Maverick from Paramount Pictures. Of all the Hollywood major studios, Paramount Pictures has been the one most open to the idea of selling its movies to streaming services. Ever since it sold most of the global distribution rights to Alex Garland’s superb movie Annihilation a few years back, it’s regularly done deals with Amazon and Netflix for its films (including the $125m sale that’s seeing Coming 2 America head to Prime Video in March). However, not everything is up for sale. According to a new piece at the Wall Street Journal, Paramount remains committed to a theatrical release for this summer’s sequel Top Gun: Maverick, starring Tom Cruise. But it’s not for the want of interest from streamers. The studio has had enquiries from both Apple and Netflix about acquiring the film, it’s been reported. But in this case, Paramount has refused to sell that particular movie. It’s said that ‘based on the strength of the film’s perceived box-office prospects, the studio refused to consider offers, according to people familiar with the matter’. The film has had its release date delayed twice, but now sits in a prime July spot later this year. There’s a firm hope that with vaccinations increasing around the world, that cinemas will be finally able to reopen by then and allow a wide release. More news on the movie as we hear it.
