Finally, the cute, furry little critters get the stage they’ve deserved for oh so long – the Ewoks are heading to streaming.
If you’re familiar with
Star Wars lore, you’ll know that pretty much the only reason good triumphed over evil in the original trilogy was because of a small band of diminutive, indigenous teddy bear creatures called the Ewoks. Largely ignored since their appearance in 1983’s
Return Of The Jedi, the cute little critters are finally getting their moment in the spotlight, with the news that Disney+ will be releasing
Ewoks: The Battle For Endor on its streaming platform.
The film was one of several cheap
Star Wars spin-offs that were released to capitalise on their success around that time. As well as the infamous
Star Wars Holiday Special, there was also
Ewoks: The Battle For Endor and its predecessor,
Ewoks: Caravan Of Courage. As somebody who had a
Ewoks movie tie-in electric toothbrush, that pretty much makes me a scholar on the subject, so believe me when I tell you that despite no longer being canon,
Battle For Endor is an essential watch, just to see how George Lucas, touted as a branding genius after the marketing success of
Star Wars, still took some interesting steps with the franchise along the way.
No news as yet as to whether
Caravan Of Courage will be appearing also, but the TV show,
The Story Of The Faithful Wookie (a segment of the
Holiday Special) and excitingly, the original animated
Clone Wars series will be making their way onto the platform on April 2nd too.
Whether this is Dinsey priming us for a visit to Endor in the next season of
The Mandalorian, who knows, but we can certainly hope.
