For the first time in his career, Noah Baumbach’s next project, White Noise, will not feature an original story.
With some wonderful films on his resume, it’s fair to say that Noah Baumbach has barely put a foot wrong as a filmmaker since the wonderful The Squid And The Whale back in 2005 established him as a director who can portray human relationships with sensitivity, humour and honesty.
With the mainstream success of Marriage Story in 2019, helped by its premiere on Netflix, Baumbach’s profile has risen further. For his next project however, he is reportedly breaking tradition and adapting an existing story rather than writing his own. According to The Film Stage, Baumbach’s next film will be an adaptation of White Noise, the novel by Don Delillo.
Casting has been announced too, with regular collaborators, Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig set to star.
The story follows ‘a professor of Hitler studies (Driver) at a liberal arts college in Middle America who’s now on his fourth wife (Gerwig). When an “airborne toxic event” unleashes a lethal black chemical cloud, they must face the danger of death together.’
Sounds fun.
Netflix, who has developed a successful partnership with Baumbach, is financing the production, with Driver and Gerwig set to reunite on screen for the first time since they starred in 2012’s Frances Ha, also directed by Baumbach.
White Noise joins a number of projects that Baumbach is already working on, including the Barbie movie he has written alongside Gerwig for Margot Robbie’s production company. We’ll bring you more news on this project as we hear it.
