Drive director Nicholas Winding Refn is forging ahead with an adaptation of Enid Blyton’s The Famous Five.
Nicholas Winding Refn first made a name for himself with the Pusher films, before directing a string of acclaimed dramas including Bronson, Drive and Only God Forgives.
Given the sometimes astonishingly violent content of the aforementioned films, it is somewhat surprising that Refn’s newest project is an adaptation of Enid Blyton’s Famous Five series. Refn does actually have form in cozy English drama, having directed two episodes of Marple in 2007.
Three 90 minute films will be produced for the BBC, with Winding Refn serving as creator and executive producer. Tim Kirkby, of Action Point and Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle fame, will direct. Episode 1 is written by Matthew Read, episode 2 is written by Priya K Dosanjh, with episode 3 being written by Matthew Bouch. There is not yet any indication of which novels are being adapted.
