Nicholas Hoult has been chatting about the roles he’s missed out on, as he joins the ensemble of Clint Eastwood’s final film.
Nicholas Hoult is building his career in a way that continually makes his next move worthy of interest, mixing leading roles with supporting parts in all kinds of interesting projects. In the last year, he’s put in a scene-stealing supporting role in the brilliantly dark drama
The Menu whilst also leading a unique take on the Dracula mythos in
Renfield. Then there’s his upcoming roles. He’ll be working with the celebrated filmmaker, Robert Eggers in
Nosferatu and has landed a plum role as a cult leader opposite Jude Law in
The Order.
Now, Hoult has also been cast opposite Toni Collette in Clint Eastwood’s final directorial outing,
Juror #2. That film will be coming to us courtesy of Warner Bros. According to
Deadline, 'the picture is set during a murder trial where one of the jurors slowly realises he killed the victim in a reckless-driving accident and tries to save the defendant without incriminating himself.’
If you didn’t know better you’d assume that Hoult was carefully hand-picking directors and roles that increase his cachet as a ‘actor with range’ and whilst that’s undoubtedly true, whilst doing the press rounds for
Renfield he has revealed that the latest stage of his career could have looked very different indeed.
As he puts it: “I screen-tested for [
The Batman] and didn’t get it, screen-tested for
Top Gun, didn’t get it. Then I got the call from Tom Cruise: hey, how about “
Mission Impossible? Okay. Got it. Then I had to drop out because I was already attached to do some more of
The Great.”
Should things have worked out differently, we’d be looking at Hoult now as one of a promising crop of stars that can do action and drama, (although he does show off both of those elements in
Renfield). Still, we don’t think we’d trade out his performance in
The Menu for a spell in a Batsuit, although it would have been great to see him go toe to toe with Cruise. We’ll bring you more news on Hoult’s upcoming projects as we hear them.
