Alicia Vikander is all set to return as Lara Croft – but not just yet, it seems, as the film’s not been given the official go ahead.
It continues to be frustrating times where production of the new Tomb Raider film is concerned. It was announced a year or two back that it was happening, with Alicia Vikander reprising the role of Lara Croft. At that point, Ben Wheatley was going to be directing from a screenplay by Amy Jump, and he told us earlier this year that he was deep into pre-production of the movie.
Then the pandemic hit, and the film melted away. Wheatley opted to commit to making The Meg 2 with Jason Statham instead, and that starts filming in January.
Tomb Raider has nonetheless had a new director for a couple of months now, with Misha Green (Lovecraft County) quickly snapped up to write and direct the movie. The problem though is that it sounds like the script has gone back somewhere close to square one, and that’s added a further delay to the project.
Vikander herself has confirmed as much in a new chat with Collider, where she confirms that “it’s not greenlit, but the script is in the making, and I think everyone is excited and I would love to revisit Lara again”.
As for the story that’s been penned, Vikander adds that “it’s very recent. It’s really now when the world is up and running again, and Misha is onboard and she’s working on the script right now. So I’m very excited to sort of read something very soon”.
Assuming the script passes muster, it shouldn’t be took long before the greenlight is given. Nonetheless, it’d be some achievement to get this up and filming this side of Christmas.
