As it de-merges from AT&T, the latest suggestion is that Warner Bros may be the next Hollywood studio to go up for sale.
Hollywood, we’d suggest, hasn’t quite fully covered from losing one of its major studios a few years ago, when Disney snapped up 21
st Century Fox and its assets. One of those assets being the Fox film studio of course.
But now comes a report that Warner Bros may just be next in line.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that Warner Bros is basically de-merging from communications company AT&T, and instead coming together with Discovery instead. The new name will be WarnerDiscovery, but over at CNBC, there’s strong speculation that this restructuring is with an eye on selling the film business a little way down the line.
It’s come to this conclusion by reading between a line or two as to a major shareholder surrendering what are described as ‘super-voting shares’. By doing so, this allows a bit more flexibility for the company to be sold down the line, and with strong rumours that Amazon and Apple are in the market for a film studio, they both seem logical homes. Amazon, of course, is currently linked with a $9bn purchase of MGM, so that may know it out of the running.
The full report on the future of WarnerDiscovery is
here. And the prediction a few years ago that we’ll be seeing a lot fewer major movie studios in the future might just have edged a footstep close to being true.
