Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget will meet its slated 2023 release date, as a raft of other Netflix animations are showcased.
Originally announced all the way back in 2018, a release date has finally emerged on Netflix’s sequel to Chicken Run. The beloved Aardman animated film was released in 2000, and it sounds like the new film will pick up pretty much exactly where the original left off. The sequel is titled Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget, and will feature many of the same characters, albeit with a mostly new voice cast including Shazam! actor Zachary Levi replacing Mel Gibson and Thandiwe Newton taking over the role from Julia Sawalha.
According to the official synopsis, Rocky and Ginger will have a daughter named Molly, voiced by Game Of Thrones actor Bella Ramsey. Some of Chicken Run’s original stars will be reprising their roles, including Jane Horrocks as Babs, Imelda Staunton as Bunty, and Lynn Ferguson as Mac. The new cast includes Harry Potter actor David Bradley, comedian Romesh Ranganathan, and Daniel Mays.
The story? ‘Set after their daring escape from Tweedy’s Farm, the chickens have finally found paradise on a secluded island. But when she hears of a dangerous threat to all chickens on the mainland, she and her friends risk everything to come to their aid. This time, they’re breaking in!’
Sam Fell (who helmed Flushed Away and ParaNorman) will be directing and the film has finally been given a release date of December 15th meaning it will arrive in 2023 as planned. The announcement was made at this week Annecy Animation Festival where Netflix also showcased Leo, ‘a coming-of-age animated musical comedy about the last year of elementary school through the eyes of Leo, a 74-year-old lizard (and class pet) voiced by Adam Sandler’.
Also present was The Monkey King, a family comedy that follows a monkey with his magical fighting stick on an epic quest. That one’s coming in August.
On the way before then is Nimona which received its world premiere at the festival. That arrives at the end of this month and follows ‘Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed), a knight in a futuristic medieval world, is framed for a crime he didn’t commit, and the only one who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona (Chloë Grace Moretz), a mischievous teen and the shapeshifting creature Ballister has been trained to destroy.’
