The animated band Gorillaz will soon be appearing on a screen near you, it has been announced: more details here.
Considering that they don’t actually exist, the fictional band Gorillaz are one of the most prolific musical outfits out there, releasing sonic adventures with the kind of regularity that puts most of their real-life rock and roll counterparts to shame.
With seven studio albums, three compilation albums, eleven extended plays, one remix album, and 41 singles to their name, nobody is doubting the cartoon creations’ contribution to the pantheon of music. But Gorillaz aren’t done there, with news emerging today that they’ll also be featuring in a full-length movie, coming to us courtesy of Netflix.
The band’s founder and only permanent musical contributor, Damon Albarn, has confirmed the project, which has been in the pipeline for a while now, telling Apple music (by way of Collider): “I’m at Netflix because we’re making a full-length Gorillaz film with Netflix. We’re having a writing session in Malibu this afternoon. It’s really exciting to do that. It’s something we’ve been wanting to do for a very long time. It’s been through so many incarnations…this Gorillaz doing a movie. Honestly.”
This will be the band’s first full-length feature film, and with Netflix backing it, we’d expect to see something pretty lavish. It feels like a good pairing and will hopefully give the other creative half of Gorrilaz, artist Jamie Hewlett, a chance to really develop the artistic side of the project. Something that he felt was being underrepresented a few years ago, leading him to him leaving the band, meaning Gorillaz entered a multi-year hiatus from 2012 until he rejoined in 2014.
This isn’t the first time that Netflix has worked with musical artists either. The short film collaboration with Radiohead, Anima, is a sight to behold, and we’re really looking forward to seeing how a full-length Gorillaz film will play out. More as we hear it.
