Netflix is already making 60-70 of its own films a year – but it has its eye on more big blockbusters going forward.
Whilst Netflix has an ambitious plan to release a new movie a week that it’s produced itself, it inevitably places fewer bets when it comes to huge blockbuster investments. Granted, it gave Michael Bay nine figures to make
6 Underground, and Zack Snyder’s
Army Of The Dead wasn’t on the cheap side either. But these have been more exceptions to the rule, than the rule itself.
Things though are continuing to evolve as the streaming wars hot up, and it’s now set up a new team to specifically pursue more huge blockbuster projects. This is one top of the existing personnel it has producing its films, but it’s been seen as a signal of intent that the streamer is looking to place more bigger bets. It’s also set to expand its team of executives seeking out and developing new material.
Such changes take a while to filter through, and we wouldn’t expect it to alter the pipeline of movies coming through for a good year or two yet. In the meantime, perhaps the biggest blockbuster on the Netflix slate –
Red Notice, starring Gal Gadot, Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds – will land this November.
