Netflix cements its agreement with the BBFC to provide age certificates on everything – and it might just head off the government.
Earlier this year, streaming giant Netflix announced that for the first time it was set to add BBFC certificates to every piece of material on its platform. This made it the first streaming service to do so, and initially it was on a trial basis. Now though, it’s become Netflix’s new normal, with the trial now becoming ongoing Netflix policy.
It’s not an entirely benevolent gesture from the service, and in part it headed off more formal noises from the government on whether to bring streaming services under the same umbrella as television companies. That would change the regulations that Netflix has to abide by, and with that in mind, the BBFC collaboration particularly makes sense.
Whether it’s enough to put the government off the scene remains to be seen. But as Netflix is currently still the only streamer to implement BBFC ratings across the board, some intervention is still likely to come along the line.
