A first image is released of the first screen adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Twits, which is announced for 2025 release.
With Timothee Chamalet’s live-action portrayal of Willy Wonka set to join the takes of Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp, not to mention an animated version of the same character in development at Netflix, some of Roald Dahl’s books have seen their fair share of adaptations. Others though, have not. For instance, we’ve never seen a film take on The Twits, despite it right up there with one of Roald Dahl’s most read books.
That’s all about to change however, with the announcement that Netflix’s take on The Twits will be arriving in 2025. The animated feature is being brought to us by Ralph Breaks The Internet's Phil Johnston alongside Katie Shanahan and Todd Demong. We’ve also got a first image to check out, which you will already have seen above.
Here’s the synopsis: ‘As the Twits rise to power, two brave orphans and a family of magical animals are forced to become as tricky as the Twits in order to save the city.’
Johnson has said on social media about the project: “The Twits was my favourite book when I was a kid. I love the Twits and their terrible tricks. I love that they lack self-awareness and personal hygiene and any inkling of human decency. And I love this movie because it reminds us that twits like the Twits, whose default emotions are anger and vengeance, can’t be allowed to win in our world.”
Netflix is really beginning to leverage its rights to Dahl’s material now. We have Wes Anderson’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar coming this autumn, along with an animated retelling of
Charlie & The Chocolate Factory on the way as well. We’ll be waiting a while for The Twits but hopefully, it will be worth it.
