Christopher Nolan hasnāt announced a new movie post-Tenet yet ā but he has been continuing to talk to Netflix.
Ordinarily in the land of Christopher Nolan movies, things would be relatively straightforward. Nolan would decide what film he wanted to make next, Warner Bros would strike up a deal to fund and release it.
However, the fallout from the studio’s decision to release its 2020 movie slate on its HBO Max service in the US at the same time as putting the films in cinemas is ongoing. Nolan was one of the most vocal critics of the idea, to the point where it’s believed to have destabilised his 15 year plus relationship with the studio.
Which all sounds like music to the ears of the biggest streaming service, Netflix.
In a new interview with Netflix film boss Scott Stuber, he tells Variety that Nolan has had ‘ongoing’ conversations with the streaming giant. He adds that “if and when he comes up with his new movie, it’s about can we be a home for it and what would we need to do to make that happen”.
“He’s an incredible filmmaker. I’m going to do everything I can. In this business I’ve learned you need to have zero ego. I get punched and knocked down and get back up”.
Given that Netflix has recently inked a deal with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment though, which at one stage sounded as likely as Nolan doing a film for streaming, it might just be that the sands are shifting.
Quite what Nolan’s next film project will be is anybody’s guess at the moment. As we hear more about it though, we – and the rest of the internet – will let you know.
