Netflix starts emailing its customers about a price ‘update’ – or increase to the rest of us – that’s coming into force next month.
As had been revealed last month, Netflix has begun to implement a second round of price increases in 18 months for its UK customer base. The streaming giant is under greater and greater competition, and spending more and more on its shows and films. Somebody has to pay the bill, and that somebody is US.
The firm’s 14 million UK subscribers have thus started to get emails in their inbox explaining that price increases will come into effect on April 23
rd 2022. And that “this update” – because ‘update’ appears to be the new word for ‘increase’ – “will allow us to deliver even more value for your membership – with stories that lift you up, move you or simply make your day a bit better”.
Across all tiers, the prices are going up. The basic level package moves from £5.99 to £6.99, its standard plan jumps to £10.99, and the premium package goes up by £2 a month to £15.99.
Disney+ also put its prices up a year after it launched, and we wait with interest to see whether it’ll do so again. There will surely come a point when saturation hits in earnest for streamers, and if the prices keep nudging up, the assumption that most consumers will be happy to subscribe to multiple services may very well be tested.
