Mortal Kombat 12 will actually be a reboot, resetting the clock back to Mortal Kombat 1, according to a recent leak.
Over the past 24 hours, developer NetherRealm Studios has teased the next game in the Mortal Kombat series, with a 10 May tweet featuring a tantalising video that shows a clock hand skipping the number 12 and going straight to one oāclock.
If that painfully vague tweet hinted at a reboot, some leaked information posted by @bilbil_kun appears to confirm the theory.
According to the leak, the next game in the long-running and very gory beat-āem-up series will be called Mortal Kombat 1, and will be available in three editions ā Standard, Premium and Kollectorās, each available at vastly different price points.

Insider Gaming, a site often associated with leaks and otherwise top-secret goings-on in the games industry, says its sources have confirmed that @bilbil_kunās leak is genuine.
If thatās the case, then there may not be long to wait until the fighterās official reveal; another rumour suggests that the new Mortal Kombat will be officially unveiled at Sonyās PlayStation Showcase. Still another rumour (yes, another one) says that showcase will happen āthe week of May 25ā. Other rumoured games include a remake of Silent Hill 2 and a remastered Bloodborne.
Still headed up by creator Ed Boon, Mortal Kombat celebrated its 30th anniversary last October. The ultra-violent, Congress-baiting franchise has thrilled and horrified audiences with its assorted fatalities across a multitude of sequels and spin-offs, culminating in a well-received Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019.
Time will tell whether Boon and his collaborators are indeed going for a back-to-basics approach for the twelfth mainline entry, and if the leaks are indeed true, what exactly is in that $249.99 Kollectorās edition.
