It’s taken two decades to get this far, but Michael Mann’s biopic of Enzo Ferrari is finally set to start filming this spring.
Well, here’s a very welcome surprise. When James Mangold’s terrific Le Mans 66 (or Ford Vs Ferrari in the US) landed back in 2019, that looked like curtains for the long time passion project of director Michael Mann. For many, many years, he was trying to get a biopic of Enzo Ferrari off the ground, and in the end it was Le Mans 66 that splintered out of it. Turns out though that Mann hadn’t given up, and his film is now back up and running. More than that, in fact: it’s happening.
There have been some changes. For a while, Hugh Jackman was going to take on the lead role, but he’s off the project now. Instead, Adam Driver – not some inexperienced in playing real life Italian figures – will be playing Ferrari. He’s going to be joined by Shailene Woodley in the cast too, along with Penelope Cruz.
It’s unclear what’s unlocked this, but a deal with STX for America distribution has clearly helped, as has a bit of money from Amazon to seal it release rights in a few countries as well.
The film is set to start shooting in May, on location in Italian. It’s agonisingly close to actually happening, and fingers crossed nothing goes wrong in the next three months to stop it again.
Troy Kennedy and Mann have penned the script for this one, based on the book Enzo Ferrari – The Man And The Machine by Brock Yates. It’s taken nearly 20 years to get this far. Who knows: next year, we might finally get to see it…
