On Friday, it seemed Michael Caine had retired from film acting – he’s now confirmed that he hasn’t.
Headlines were made around the world at the end of last week, when Sir Michael Caine gave an interview on the terrific Kermode & Mayo Film Review show on BBC Radio Five Live. In said interview, he seemed fairly clear that his new film, Best Sellers was to be his last. He said that he hadn’t acting for two years, in part because “I have a spine problem which affects my legs and I can’t walk very well”.
He added that he’d written some books in that period of time, saying “I’m now not an actor, I’m a writer, which is lovely because as an actor you have to get up at half past six in the morning and go to the studio. As a writer, you can start writing without leaving the bed”.
It did seem pretty clear that he’d decided to retire from acting, but a fresh statement has since come out clarifying that isn’t actually the case.
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, he said that he’s still an actor, and that “regarding retirement, I’ve spent over 50 years getting up at 6am to make movies, and I’m not getting rid of my alarm clock!”.
Thus, this particular news cycle is complete. Sir Michael Caine retired from acting, but hasn’t retired from acting. Glad that’s all sorted.
