Netflix and Sony are teaming up for the new Matilda film.
Last week, we reported the news that – after a period of time waiting for the rights to be ready – the award-winning musical take on Roald Dahl’s Matilda is coming to the big screen. The core team behind the musical – director Matthew Warchus, writer Dennis Kelly and music maestro Tim Minchin – are all involved.
Now we learn how it’s all going to be funded.
It’s going to be a co-production between Sony Pictures and Netflix. Sony backed Danny DeVito’s film adaptation of the story in 1996, with the movie proving to be a modest commercial success at best, but one that’s endured since. It looks like the deal means, too, that the UK is the only territory in the world where the film will be getting a wide cinema release.
Sony will be distributing the movie over here, and Netflix will have distribution rights everywhere else in the world. Who pays how much of the bill isn’t clear.
Filming is set to begin on the movie later this year, and it’s a fair bet that we’ll be seeing it in 2021. More on the project as we hear it.
