The MCU’s bad guy team-up movie Thunderbolts is moving forwards, with Jake Schreier in the hot seat and plans to shoot next summer.
Whilst Marvel Cinematic Universe buffs pore over the makeup of the planned
Fantastic Four film or search for clues as to how Marvel plans to introduce mutants into its films, the studio is busying itself pushing ahead with a project that has thus far, flown pretty much under the radar.
Thunderbolts is set to be a bad guy team-up movie, with the original comic book presenting a team not a million miles away from DC’s Suicide Squad.
The film now has a director with Jake Screier, the filmmaker behind 2015’s excellent
Robot & Frank having been selected to helm the project following a very successful pitch, according to
Deadline.
As for which villains will appear in the movie, Zemo has led the team before and is a developing MCU character following his extended turn in the Disney+ show,
Falcon and the Winter Soldier. There is also speculation that Yelena Belova, Ghost, Taskmaster and Tim Roth’s take on The Abomination could appear.
Other candidates are US Agent or even the Winter Soldier. Given that an alien symbiote now exists within the MCU might we even see that universe’s version of Venom appear? The character has been a part of the Thunderbolts team in the comics before.
William Hurt’s General “Thunderbolt” Ross may be due for a recall too as he forms the team in the original comics (although the passing of Hurt obviously means the role would need to be recast), but with production not set to start until next summer it’s going to be a case of waiting for some time for confirmation of any casting. We do at least know that
Black Widow writer Eric Pearson is working on the script. We’ll bring you more updates as we hear them.
