Marvel Studio’s Kevin Feige is a busy man. As well as overseeing one avenue of Lucasfilm’s planned
Star Wars revival on the big screen, there’s also the small matter of navigating the narratively interconnected films and TV shows of the Marvel Cinematic Universe through a pandemic. Some small screen titles can be launched via Disney+, where the films have found themselves delayed.
With stories often crossing over, you can imagine it might be quite the headache, but in an interview with
Deadline, Feige revealed that for the most part, the studio’s plan has remained unchanged, stating “our long lead plan was to have the MCU and the storytelling woven between weekly episodic big swings on Disney+ and into the feature big swings in theatres. It’s my great hope that that continues”.
“Everything we’ve done at Marvel Studios has been based in ‘okay, if everything goes perfectly, here’s what we’d like to do.’ And until this past year, things have gone remarkably well. And it’s my hope that the world gets back on track and we all get back into theatres, and that people will see and experience week by week for the low monthly fee of Disney+ of what we’re bringing there, and then be excited to get together with people again in real life and sit with strangers and share an experience on the big screen”.
Feige also spoke about the plans for
Black Panther 2, reiterating that he is working with director Ryan Coogler to focus the story on the wider world of Wakanda and confirming again that the late star Chadwick Boseman, who played the title character before his untimely passing last year, will not be recast or feature as a digital double. “Ryan Coogler is working very hard right now on the script with all the respect and love and genius that he has, which gives us great solace, so it was always about furthering the mythology and the inspiration of Wakanda. There’s also the task of honoring and respecting the ongoing learnings and teachings from Chad as well”.
Finally, Feige was asked about the possibility of the popular Netflix Marvel characters including Daredevil, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones making their way into the MCU now the rights with Netflix have expired. With Sony’s Marvel characters seemingly being transplanted into the MCU, rumours have swirled that Charlie Cox’s Daredevil character may also make an appearance.
On that note, Feige dismissed the idea happening any time soon, but didn’t rule it out entirely.
You can catch the entire piece over at Deadline. Marvel’s 2021 offerings begin with
WandaVision on Disney+ this month, whilst
Black Widow is set to hit cinemas in May.
