Four years since the release of the strange and violent Mandy, Panos Cosmatos is returning with a ‘phantasmagorical fantasy nightmare’.
It’s been four years since we experienced the violently surreal fever dream that was
Mandy, a beautifully crafted independent movie that perhaps marked the apex of Nicolas Cage’s run as an indie film leading man (although last year’s
Pig was up there too).
Mandy oozed style, a sort of blood-soaked delirium that was perhaps too far out to meet the tastes of everybody, but nonetheless it remains as one of the vivid viewing experiences of 2018.
The film’s director, Panos Cosmatos, will soon be back in the director’s chair as it’s been announced that his next project is ready to go. A24 is backing the project and details are scant, but we do know ‘the story unfolds deep within a strange galaxy where two lovers are torn apart as they try to survive a malevolent invasion.’ The project has been described as a ‘phantasmagorical fantasy nightmare’ which frankly, is more than enough to get us excited.
Cosmatos is directing with
Counterpart scribe Maegan Houang penning the screenplay alongside him. No casting has been announced as of yet but given the fact that Cage’s recruitment to
Mandy elevated the material, whilst also giving the actor’s career trajectory something of an upwards bump, we’re very curious to see who Cosmatos chooses for his leads in
Nekrokosm. We’ll let you know more as we hear it.
