Netflix has revealed the first images of the Luther film, which we now know will land on the streaming service in March 2023.
The
Luther film has been in the works for quite a while. The last we saw of the grizzled detective, played by Idris Elba, was series 5 on the BBC in 2019, which left him much the worse for wear.
Though little is known about the plot for the upcoming film, Idris Elba, chatting to
Empire earlier this week ā who also released some exclusive images from the film ā said that āwe really peel the onion back here because we had the time and scale to do that. It also gives Neil [Cross, the showās creator] a lot more, you know, Luther-land to play with, in terms of where Luther can go, how he goes, what the landscape. Itās really dangerous when expanding from television to film to throw a lot of money at it, and for that moment to change the characteristics of the show. I wanted to make sure that even though we had a bigger budget, [we didnāt] distort the parameters of Luther-land too muchā.
Idris Elba, of course, returns as the troubled titular detective, with Dermot Crowley also reprising his role as DCI Martin Schenk.
New additions to the cast include Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis and martial artist Jess Liaudin. It is currently unknown whether Ruth Wilson will reprise her role as fan favourite character Alice Morgan, especially given the ending of the fifth series.
Neil Cross has penned the script for the film, with director Jamie Payne, who helmed series 5 of the drama, behind the camera.
Luther will be released on Netflix in March 2023, we’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
