Bourne director Doug Liman says he and Tom Cruise ā€˜still talk’ about their planned movie, Luna Park, which will partly be shot in space. If it happens.

Road House and The Bourne Identity director Doug Liman has been out and about promoting his latest thriller, The Instigators, but has set aside time to air his feelings about Amazon MGM, as well as chat about the likelihood of a sequel to 2014’s Edge Of Tomorrow.

One particular project we’ve been wondering about, though, is a planned action adventure with Tom Cruise that was first publicly talked about in 2020. Billed as a collaboration between Liman and Cruise’s production company, SpaceX and NASA, it was said that the project would see Cruise become the first civilian to perform a spacewalk.

Things have been rather quite on the production since, though Liman has recently said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that ā€œIt’s something we still talk about, for sure.ā€

Liman didn’t have much else to add other than to concede that Cruise is perpetually busy and that, ā€œI also feel that movies happen when they happen for a reason.ā€

ā€œThere’s a reason we haven’t gone to space yet,ā€ Liman said, ā€œand when we finally do and the movie comes out, I know I’ll look back at it and be like, ā€˜Thank god it didn’t happen earlier.'ā€

The thriller, called Luna Park, dates back to at least 2014. About a group of high-tech thieves who cobble together a spacecraft in order to pull of an impossibly daring heist on the moon, the screenplay is credited to writers Mark Bowden, Jason Fuchs and Simon Kinberg. One early script doing the rounds, dated May 2014, simply reads ā€˜Revisions by Doug Liman’ on the title page.

If it does happen – and Liman notably says ā€˜when’ rather than ā€˜if’ in that quote above – Luna Park could be a crowd-pleasing summer adventure in the vein of the Mission: Impossible movies. Liman and Cruise’s collaborations have certainly been fruitful in the past; Edge Of Tomorrow is a much-loved sci-fi action flick, while 2017’s American Made was a zesty crime thriller based on the real-life story of renegade pilot, Barry Seal.

More on Luna Park as we get it. The Instigators, which stars Casey Affleck and Bourne himself, Matt Damon, is streaming on AppleTV+ from the 9th August.
