Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is said to have accepted the role for the Star Wars cinematic project that currently has the most ‘momentum’.
Whilst things may yet be quiet for a while to come, reports have emerged that a director has been attached to the Damon Lindelof
Star Wars project that’s rumoured to be happening. You might be familiar with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s work if you’ve watched Marvel Studio’s
Ms Marvel, but she’s also a highly-respected short filmmaker, having won acclaim and Oscars for
Saving Face and
The Girl In The River.
Despite the fact that the script isn’t complete, and also the fact that we only heard about this project back in March, it is said to currently be the
Star Wars film project with the most ‘momentum.’ Whilst the story is clearly still being worked on, it seems like Lucasfilm have learned from some of its disastrous collaborations with directors over the past few years and has sought to bring Obaid-Chinoy in early in the process to develop a vision that all creatives on board are aligned with.
As for Lindelof, his take on the
Watchmen graphic novel took a book that many considered unfilmable and created something wonderful out of it. Certainly, for a cinematic franchise like
Star Wars which has become somewhat stale, a
Watchmen-like approach could be the breath of fresh air that the series needs.
It could be a while before we hear anything official, and we just hope that this news becoming public doesn’t blur Lucasfilm’s thinking in any way, as the company’s tendency to zig-zag is behind the lack of joined-up thinking that has seen the franchise’s cinematic prospects lie dormant for so long. We’ll bring you more on this story as we hear it.
