The six Middle Earth films are making their Ultra HD 4K Blu-ray debut just in time for Christmas ā with a bigger set next summer too.
It’s looking like this is actually going to happen. For the past month or two, rumours have been rife that Warner Bros would be releasing the Lord Of The Rings and possibly The Hobbit movies on the Ultra HD 4K Blu-ray format this year.
UPDATE: All confirmed! Both trilogies will land on the 4K disc format on December 1st in the US and November 30th in the UK.
You can find out more about The Lord Of The Rings 4K release here, and The Hobbit 4K release here.Furthermore, as The One Ring reports, āWarner Bros. is also announcing that in the summer of 2021 it will be releasing a 4K ULTIMATE COLLECTORS’ EDITION with theatrical and extended versions of ALL SIX of the remastered films and new bonus content. Additionally, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first The Lord of the Rings film, a newly remastered Blu-ray trilogy of The Lord of the Rings films will be available in the Fall of 2021, also including the theatrical and extended versionsā.To clarify: we think this meansā¦November/December 2020: 4K disc releases with theatrical and extended editionsSummer 2021: posh box set with the 4K discs inFall 2021: Standard Blu-ray remastersOriginal story continuesā¦
Then it looked like those plans had been delayed until 2021. But now, thanks to German site 4kFilm, we learn that all six films in the series will be arriving at the start of December. At the moment, it’s unclear whether both the theatrical and extended cuts are getting the 4K treatment. But the films in some form are finally arriving.
The site says that The Fellowship Of The Ring, The Two Towers, Return Of The King, An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation Of Smaug and The Battle Of The Five Armies will all be available though on December 3rd in Germany, and it’s likely that other territories will fall into line with that.
When we get more information we’ll let you know. Thereās been no official announcement as of yet, we should clarify, but it canāt be too far behind.
For now, here’s the box art that 4kFilm has uncovered…
