Covid concerns have led to Lionsgate disembarking The Plane, but now another distributor has boarded the Gerard Butler action vehicle.
It seems that plans for
The Plane, an upcoming Gerard Butler action movie, are back on track with the production now being distributed by Solstice Studios.
The film was left in limbo when it was reportedly unable to obtain Covid insurance when Lionsgate was backing the project. That rather crucial detail led to filming being delayed, which in turn led to Lionsgate departing the movie.
According to
Deadline, the production was set to shoot in Malaysia last month, but those plans were abandoned when Covid cases in the country suddenly spiked. The film’s producers were then considering the Dominican Republic or the US, but with a location not firmly locked down, Lionsgate – who purchased UK and US distribution rights to the film last year – elected to pull out.
Dark Horizons are now reporting that it is full steam ahead and principal photography will begin in June 2021.
The plot is set to centre on Butler starring as ‘a commercial pilot who, after a heroic job of successfully landing his storm-damaged aircraft in a war zone, finds himself caught between the agendas of multiple militias who are planning to take the plane and its passengers hostage. As the world’s authorities and media search for the disappeared aircraft, the pilot must rise to the occasion and keep his passengers safe long enough for help to arrive.’
Hopefully, the project seems to have been be salvaged, plus there’s lots to be excited about on the Gerard Butler front, as was revealed by our
very recent and very carefully ordered list of upcoming films starring the man himself.
