Reese Witherspoon has been chatting about her desire to safeguard the Legally Blonde series’ legacy, following 2003’s divisive sequel.
We’ve known for some time now that almost two decades after she last played the role, Reese Witherspoon will be returning to the shoes of Elle Woods for Legally Blonde 3. The film was announced in 2018 – originally set to release in 2020 before being pushed back to May of this year. Although we’ve had the odd update on the state of the script since then, there have been no further casting announcements and the film still needs a director. Who knows when it will all eventually come together?
“I’m still hoping that Legally Blonde 3 is gonna come together in the right way,” Witherspoon told USA Today. “The right way. I feel like these characters are my friends, I would never make the subpar, mediocre version of their story.”
As to how to safeguard these characters? Well, Witherspoon was adamant that Top Gun: Maverick has laid the blueprint out there for other ‘legacy sequels’ to follow: “It’s just like Top Gun. They waited a long time to make another version of that movie, and I loved the nostalgia piece they incorporated in it. So definitely that gave us a lot of inspiration about what we would want to do with Elle Woods and make sure that we had all those same touchstones that mattered to people back then.”
The last we heard in terms of concrete details regarding the film’s status was in November of last year, when MGM executive Pamela Abdy offered an update on the movie’s story, saying that the film “will catch up with Elle as a working mother who has now turned 40. Mindy Kaling and Dan [Goor] are writing it now for Reese [Witherspoon] to star. Reese and Lauren Neustadter are producing with Marc Platt. We’re all developing it together. What does Elle Woods look like at 40? Elle is a mom with a thriving career. We’re looking forward to seeing the script come in sometime in the first quarter.”
Of course, MGM’s takeover by Amazon might be another factor at play here too, so who knows when, or even if we’ll get more Legally Blonde. We can probably predict that it won’t be anytime soon though. Still, a careful approach can’t be a bad thing, so even if we have to wait for this one, you can count us in.
