Paramount’s planned Bob Marley biopic continues to move forward, with Lashana Lynch the latest addition to the cast.
It’s been quite a while since we heard anything regarding director Reinaldo Marcus Green’s plans for a Bob Marley film, a project that has currently been in active development for at least a year. Back in November of 2021, Green confirmed that Zach Baylin, screenwriter on his last film, the excellent King Richard, would be collaborating with him once more. Crucially, Green revealed that he had input directly from the Marley family too. “Ziggy Marley is a producer on the project which will begin its story in 1976 and really will focus on the making of the iconic album, Exodus.” said Green last November.
The album Exodus was recorded by the band in London after Marley survived an assassination attempt and was forced to flee Jamaica.
After a lengthy casting process, we have now learned that No Time To Die's Lashana Lynch, a former Film Stories magazine cover star (which no doubt helped, er, sway the decision), will be portraying Marley’s wife, Rita. The project, which is being backed by Paramount, will feature One Night In Miami's Kingsley Ben-Adir as Marley himself, although that casting decision was announced a while ago.
Reportedly, both Marley’s family and Paramount were keen on Lynch’s casting as Rita, following chemistry tests with Ben-Adir. There’s no release window slated for the film as yet, nor do we know when the film is set to shoot. We do however know that importantly, the project has the rights to Marley’s music.
