How deep is Branagh’s love for the Bee Gees? Well, pretty deep, with the news that he’s reteaming with Ben Elton for a biopic of the disco icons.
In the wake of highly-successful 70s and 80s era music biopics, Rocketman and Bohemian Rhapsody, Paramount is putting together an impressive team to tackle a take on the story of the Bee Gees, boogie kings of the dancefloor throughout that era.
Kenneth Branagh has been selected to direct the project with Ben Elton on script duties. The project will reunite Branagh and Elton in these roles following their work on the charming 2018 Shakespeare biopic, All Is True. What’s more, Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment will produce the project. Amblin’s longtime producer, Frank Marshall recently directed a documentary for HBO on the band entitled How Can You Mend A Broken Heart? Barry Gibb, the sole remaining member of the band will executive produce.
One thing is for sure, that is a pretty impressive roll call. With 2019’s Elton John biopic, Rocketman doing very impressively and Bohemian Rhapsody, the 2018 Queen story making almost a billion dollars and winning a hatful of Oscars, Paramount will be looking for critical and commercial success with this project.
Branagh is known for taking on projects of wildly different hues, with his recent films covering period crime dramas, Elizabethan-era biopics and big budget family adventures in the form of Artemis Fowl. We’re certainly interested to see where he and Elton go with the story of the Bee Gees. We’ll bring you more news as we hear it.
