The director of Us and Get Out, Jordan Peele, will be the first filmmaker to remake a Wes Craven film since the horror master’s death in 2015.
It’s fair to say that Jordan Peele has a pretty great track record with Universal. The two horror movies he’s directed for the studio thus far, Get Out and Us, have not only been hugely impressive films, they’ve also collectively banked more than half a billion dollars in box-office grosses for the studio. Now, according to Collider, Peele will be teaming with Universal again to make another satirical social horror film, although this time it will be a remake of Wes Craven’s 1991 movie The People Under the Stairs.
There’s no word as yet whether Peele plans to direct but he will produce, as he has done with Nia DaCosta’s upcoming Candyman reimagining, a film which like the original version of The People Under The Stairs, deals with themes of gentrification and class conflict. Craven’s original made a tidy gross of $31m from a $6m budget when it released in 1991, going on to become something of a cult hit with its satirical commentary on the struggle within the American class system.
With current events in the US exposing its deep divides as a nation once again, The People Under the Stairs seems like a timely project, with Peele seeming like the ideal talent to bring the project to fruition. More news on this one as we have it.
