Warner Bros is moving Joker: Folie A Deux to digital platforms at speed, as the film sits just below $200m at the box office.
You don’t need us to tell you that it wasn’t supposed to work out like this. After the $1bn gross for 2019’s Joker film, which cost around $60m to make, the sequel seemed a shoo-in for success. But with a tripled production budget came pitfalls, it seems, and Joker: Folie A Deux is going to now struggle to bring in $250m off its theatrical run.
Currently, its worldwide total sits at $192m at the time of writing. It’s not going to lead to Christmas parties being cancelled at Warner Bros, but it’s some way to fall.
The divisive critical and audience response has been particularly notable for the film, and that’s not helped.
The studio is thus doing what it does with films that don’t ignite at the box office, and fast-tracking the video on demand release. In America – and it’s expected that it’ll follow suit in the UK – Warner Bros is now set to send Joker: Folie A Deux to premium video on demand 29th October. That’s just three weeks after it debuted in cinemas.
Itās not a wildly unexpected move, and even when the studio’s had a massive success such as Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, it’s not taking much more than a month to get films to digital services. Joker: Folie A Deux appears to be moving just that bit quicky, however.
The studio is still giving the film a full physical media release as well, with a DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray due this side of Christmas. No release date has been officially announced for that, though.
We’ll have more on that as we hear of an announcement, and it’s fair to also assume you won’t be hearing anything about Joker 3 anytime soon.
