Keanu Reeves takes the lead in Johnny Mnemonic, that’s getting a UK Blu-ray release at last – with no shortage of extra features.
Before he struck sci-fi gold with
The Matrix, Keanu Reeves hadn’t been shy about dabbling with the genre. In particular, a film he’s often talked up is Robert Longo’s big screen adaptation of William Gibson’s
Johnny Mnemonic. Adapted for the screen by Gibson himself, the 1995 movie is set in 2021, and sees Reeves as a data courier carrying valuable information in his head. Alongside Dina Meyer, he has to deliver the data and survive those hunting him down.
In truth, the film was a critical and commercial disappointment on its original release – I went to see it in a near-empty cinema the week after it came out – but over time, it’s built up a fanbase.
Only now though is it getting its first Blu-ray release in the UK, courtesy of the folks at 101 Films. And it’s putting quite the release together. It’s pulled together a new commentary, limited edition booklet, packaging and art cards. And also brought in a short film, a further commentary, the Japanese director’s cut and other bits and bobs.
The whole package is available now. You can
find out more information, and order the set, here.
UPDATE: a standard, lower priced edition is now available from June 13th too.
More on that here.
