Controversial director John Waters returns to the world of film for the first time in almost two decades with Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad Romance.
There’s no question that John Waters is a director who joyously divides opinion. From the extreme excesses of early films like Pink Flamingos in 1972 right through to his last film A Dirty Shame in 2004, Waters has courted controversy for the content of his films, whether it’s nudity, profanity or general bad taste.
That trend is not set to break any time soon, as his next project, Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad Romance is announced.
The novel it is based on “follows Marsha Sprinkle, a suitcase thief, scammer and master of disguise. Dogs and children hate her. Her own family wants her dead. She’s smart, she’s desperate, she’s disturbed, and she’s on the run with a big chip on her shoulder. They call her Liarmouth ― until one insane man makes her tell the truth.”
Waters will write and direct for Village Roadshow Pictures.
He said of the project that “Liarmouth is the craziest thing I’ve written in a while, so maybe it’s fitting that my novel was shocking enough to jumpstart the engine of my film career. I’m thrilled to be back in the movie business, hopefully to spread demented joy to adventuresome moviegoers around the world”.
No casting has yet been announced, but we’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
