Joel Coen’s upcoming Macbeth movie is heading to Apple’s streaming service – but is still set to get a theatrical release too.
Joel Coen’s
The Tragedy Of Macbeth, the first film Coen has made without his brother Ethan, will be an Apple Original it’s been announced. However, according to reports, the film will still be getting a full theatrical release via distributor A24 at some point late this year, ahead of making its debut on the streaming platform shortly afterwards.
The news that Coen’s highly-anticipated Shakespearean adaptation will still receive a wide cinema release is heartening indeed, especially as it promises to be very much in the mix when it comes to next year’s awards chatter.
With Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand starring and Coen behind the camera, the three creatives are awards magnets already, boasting as many Oscars between them as we can count on our fingers (and thumbs). Also with
Roma and
Inside Llewyn Davis’ cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel lensing the film and Carter Burwell composing, it will surely be a treat worthy of the largest screen and loudest sound system possible.
The film itself is the latest attempt to take on one of Shakespeare’s most adapted plays, with the most recent version landing as recently as 2015 in the form of Justin Kurzel’s
Macbeth, that starred Michael Fassbender in the title role alongside Marion Cotillard as Lady Macbeth. That film was visually sumptuous, but for some, lacked the kinetic energy of Kurzel’s other films.
With Washington and McDormand playing an older version of the conspiring couple, it’ll be interesting to see how their portrayal offers a different take. We’ll let you know as we hear more on the production.
