Over a decade since the script first topped the Black List, the biopic of Jim Henson looks like it might finally be going ahead.
Here’s a project that’s been in and around the Hollywood system for a while: a biopic of the extraordinary, much-missed Jim Henson. The creator of the likes of The Muppets, Labyrinth, Fraggle Rock and so much more, Henson’s life has been covered in a superb biography from Brian Jay Jones. You can find that here.
The Muppet Man is the name of the film, and originally the script was penned by Christopher Weekes, with his screenplay topping the Black List of the best unproduced screenplays all the way back in 2009. Since then, Aaron and Jordan Kandell have written a draft. And now Michael Mitnick (The Current War) has been hired to pen the screenplay for a film that finally looks like it might just be going forward.
Disney is backing the project in conjunction with The Jim Henson Company, and whilst there’s no word as to who’s directing as of yet, there’s actually a sign of momentum here.
The film will be live action, we know that much. As we hear more, we’ll let you know.
